Harris Georgiades resigns from think tank post over Neophytou's candidacy
On October 27, 2026, Harris Georgiades, a senior figure in the Democratic Rally (DISY) party, sent a letter to party leader Annita Demetriou announcing his refusal to participate in the party’s 2028 presidential election campaign if former leader Averof Neophytou secures the nomination. Georgiades, who also offered his resignation as chairman of the Glafcos Clerides Institute, cited “reasons of principle” and alleged that Neophytou’s candidacy was formed under “conditions of pressure and overt political blackmail.” He explicitly stated that he could not support a candidate who kept the option of an independent run open until the final stages.
The intervention caused significant internal friction within DISY, with party officials labeling his move as divisive. Yiannis Karousos, the party’s deputy leader, criticized the decision as “tactical” and “inappropriate,” questioning if Georgiades was implying that Annita Demetriou had been dishonest regarding the reasons for her own withdrawal from the race. Parliamentary spokesman Dimitris Demetriou also expressed disagreement with the timing of the announcement.
Currently, DISY is in the process of selecting its candidate between Averof Neophytou and Giorgos Pamboridis. While the party leadership, including Annita Demetriou, has prioritized maintaining unity, reports suggest she is expected to accept Georgiades' resignation from the institute. Party members continue to call for restraint as the internal selection process proceeds toward the final vote.
