Internal crisis in DISY party follows Haris Georgiades' ultimatum
On October 27, 2026, the Democratic Rally (DISY) party in Cyprus experienced significant internal turmoil after former deputy leader Haris Georgiades announced in a letter to party president Annita Demetriou that he would not support Averof Neophytou if the latter is chosen as the party's presidential candidate. Georgiades accused Neophytou of political blackmail, claiming his potential candidacy was formed under duress. Alongside this declaration, Georgiades offered his resignation as chairman of the Glafcos Clerides Institute.
In response, party president Annita Demetriou rejected Georgiades' resignation, stating that internal issues must be resolved through dialogue rather than resignations. She emphasized her commitment to party unity and urged members to respect the upcoming democratic process. Meanwhile, further disruption occurred as Dr. Andrea Theologou Manoli, a spokesperson for NEDISY and special advisor on rule-of-law issues, resigned from her position, citing her disagreement with Georgiades' public stance and his characterization of party events as political blackmail.
Other party officials, including Charalambos Stavridis, have publicly criticized Georgiades, noting his past political deviations and stressing the importance of respecting the majority decision. With internal elections scheduled for next month, the party leadership is now calling for unity to maintain a winning trajectory while the political landscape remains highly polarized.
