First nationwide study reveals mental health challenges among new mothers in Cyprus
The Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) recently released findings from the first nationwide study on maternal mental health in Cyprus. The research, conducted as part of the European project 'Mind the Mum,' indicates that one in two new mothers experiences symptoms of depression and anxiety requiring further investigation. Additionally, half of the surveyed women described their birthing experience as painful, highlighting a significant need for improved psychological support during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
The study involved 474 participants and was overseen by Scientific Coordinator Dr. Eleni Hadjigeorgiou, an Associate Professor of Midwifery. Data collection and analysis were presented at a conference held on October 14-15 at the Shacolas Educational Centre for Clinical Medicine in Nicosia, which was attended by 80 health professionals. The event was organized in collaboration with the Midwives Committee of the Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association and supported by the Ministry of Health's National Committee for Breastfeeding.
Running from 2024 to 2027 and co-funded by the European Union through the EU4Health program, 'Mind the Mum' focuses on gathering data in Cyprus and Slovenia. The initiative aims to develop support programs for mothers and healthcare providers, ultimately providing recommendations to establish best practices for maternal care at both national and European levels.
