Cyprus records 45 road fatalities in 2025 with a 10% annual increase
The European Commission's Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport released final statistics on Tuesday, confirming that 45 people died in road traffic accidents in Cyprus in 2025. This figure marks a 10% increase compared to 2024, resulting in a rate of 45 deaths per million inhabitants, slightly higher than the European Union average of 43 per million.
Despite the annual rise, the data indicates a long-term improvement, with 2025 fatalities being 13% lower than in 2019 and 12% lower than the 2017-2019 average. Across the entire European Union, 19,350 lives were lost to road accidents in 2025, representing a 3% decrease from the previous year and a 15% reduction compared to 2019.
Preliminary data for the first half of 2026 suggests a downward trend, showing a reduction of more than 10% in road fatalities compared to the same period in 2025. The European Commission advises caution regarding these early figures, noting that the absolute change in deaths involves fewer than ten individuals and that the 2026 statistics remain subject to further review.
