Eurostat reports 2024 fertility rates in Cyprus and the EU
In 2024, the total fertility rate in Cyprus reached 1.39 births per woman, according to data released by Eurostat. This figure places Cyprus slightly above the European Union average, which fell to 1.34, marking the lowest level recorded since the data series began in 2001. Despite this performance, the fertility rate in Cyprus remains significantly below the population replacement threshold of 2.10 births per woman.
Across the European Union, fertility rates have remained consistently below the replacement level over the last two decades, typically fluctuating between 1.34 and 1.57. Out of 1,165 NUTS 3 regions in the EU, 439 recorded rates below the union average, while 714 regions exceeded it. Analysts emphasize that while Cyprus compares favorably to the EU average, the persistent sub-replacement fertility presents long-term demographic challenges. Experts point to economic pressures, such as high housing costs and the rising cost of living, as major barriers to family planning, with some commentators warning that the issue carries implications for national stability and future labor market viability.
