EU energy ministers meet in Luxembourg to address market volatility and grid reform
EU energy ministers gathered in Luxembourg on October 29, 2026, to address mounting concerns over energy security and soaring costs as the winter season approaches. With natural gas prices exceeding 100 euros per megawatt-hour and electricity prices surpassing 300 euros in many markets, discussions focused on reforming grid fees and boosting investment in storage and interconnections. European Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen warned of a difficult winter ahead due to these sustained high costs.
Cyprus Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Michalis Damianou participated in the summit, emphasizing that infrastructure development must respect the specific conditions of each member state. He also called for a realistic approach to climate targets given current economic pressures. Meanwhile, Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou announced he would provide an update on the progress of the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection. Ministers analyzed long-term supply stability while debating a proposed European Commission regulation aimed at making network pricing more transparent and cost-effective through digitalization and smart meter deployment.
