EU energy ministers to meet in Luxembourg to discuss winter security and network fees
On October 29, 2026, the EU Council of Ministers for Transport, Telecommunications, and Energy will convene in Luxembourg to address urgent energy priorities. Cyprus Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, Michalis Damianou, is confirmed to participate in the discussions.
The primary agenda item is the European Commission's proposal for new network fees, which aims to reduce electricity prices for consumers. The proposal emphasizes the digitalization of energy infrastructure through the implementation of smart grids and smart meters, alongside a structural reform of network tariffs to enhance transparency and cost-efficiency. Additionally, ministers will evaluate the EU's energy security posture for the upcoming 2026-2027 winter season and beyond.
These discussions take place against a backdrop of ongoing regional volatility, including the long-term impact of Russia's war in Ukraine and the escalating conflict in the Middle East. These geopolitical tensions continue to exert pressure on global energy supply chains and price stability. The council aims to balance short-term protective measures with long-term strategic challenges to ensure sustainable and reliable energy access across the European Union.
