AKEL leadership meets with data protection commissioner
On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, and the party’s Central Organizational Secretary, Charis Karamanos, held a meeting with the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, Maria Christofidou. The discussion primarily focused on the necessity for political parties to ensure full and strict compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the corresponding national legislative framework regarding privacy protection.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the operational challenges facing the Commissioner’s office, specifically the persistent issue of severe understaffing. Commissioner Christofidou emphasized that the increasing volume of cases, relative to the limited human resources available, creates a critical operational gap, a concern she had previously highlighted during recent parliamentary budget discussions. Furthermore, the participants exchanged views on the implications of artificial intelligence and the specific challenges this technology poses for data protection on a global scale.
The meeting concluded with a comprehensive review of the current landscape of data privacy in Cyprus, as the party and the independent authority continue to evaluate the capacity of state institutions to handle modern regulatory demands.
