Environmental federation opposes asphalt plant relocation to Mitsero
The Coordinating Committee of the Cyprus Federation of Environmental Organizations (OPOK) has formally reaffirmed its support for the residents of Mitsero who are opposing the relocation of an asphalt concrete production plant to their region. The federation argues that the project should not be considered in isolation, as the area is already heavily burdened by existing industrial activities, including quarries, livestock facilities, slaughterhouses, and waste management sites. Residents report ongoing issues with dust, odors, and heavy traffic, all of which would be exacerbated by the new facility.
Of particular concern to OPOK is the proposed site's proximity to the 'Mitsero-Agrokipia' Natura 2000 protected area, which is located approximately 300 meters from the facility. The federation warns that the construction and operation of the plant pose significant risks to protected habitats and species, as well as potential negative impacts on soil and water quality. OPOK emphasizes that the cumulative pressure from existing and new industrial operations necessitates a holistic approach to environmental impact assessment, prioritizing the health and living conditions of the local community.
