Turkey reiterates hardline stance on Cyprus and conducts military drills near the island
Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler, speaking at a military ceremony in Iskenderun on October 27, 2026, reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to using all necessary political and military measures to ensure the safety of Turkish Cypriots. Invoking the 1960 Treaties of Guarantee and Alliance, Guler dismissed decades of negotiations as fruitless and insisted on the recognition of "sovereign equality" and the "equal international status" of Turkish Cypriots. While stating that Turkey wishes to maintain communication with Greece, he qualified this by declaring that Ankara will not compromise its interests in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
Following these remarks, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on October 29, 2026, that it successfully conducted an extensive training flight over international waters south of Cyprus. Involving fighter jets and support aircraft, the maneuver was presented by Ankara as a measure to demonstrate operational readiness and the protection of its rights and interests. Conversely, some reports, including those from AlphaNews, characterized the operation as a provocation and a breach of the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR), noting that the action coincided with recent discussions regarding the permanent presence of Greek F-16 Viper aircraft in Paphos.
