Cyprus under yellow weather alert as severe storms cause disruptions
On Tuesday, October 28, 2026, the Department of Meteorology of Cyprus issued a yellow weather alert effective from 2:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. due to a low-pressure system moving from the Aegean Sea. The adverse weather conditions, characterized by heavy rain, hail, and localized thunderstorms, began in the western half of the island and extended to other regions by the afternoon. Precipitation rates reached between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour, accompanied by wind gusts reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort during storms.
The severe weather has led to significant infrastructure and travel disruptions. Reports indicate power outages in parts of Larnaca and Limassol, where the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has been dispatched for repairs. Furthermore, heavy rainfall resulted in limited visibility on roads, particularly in the Kofinou area, prompting police to issue warnings for motorists to maintain low speeds and exercise extreme caution. While the daytime high temperatures ranged from 11°C in mountainous areas to 25°C in the interior and coastal regions, the forecast suggests that the rainy weather, localized storms, and the risk of hail will continue throughout the night, primarily affecting coastal areas.
