Metal structure collapses on cars in Paphos amid severe weather
On Thursday, October 29, 2026, strong winds and heavy rainfall caused a metal pergola to collapse from the sixth floor of a new apartment building on Grivas Digenis Avenue in Paphos. The structure landed on two parked vehicles, causing extensive property damage but resulting in no human injuries, as both cars were unoccupied at the time of the incident. Local authorities, including the police and Paphos municipality officials, responded to the scene to document the event and assess the damage.
The incident occurred during a period of active adverse weather, with the Meteorological Service having issued a yellow warning in effect from 9:00 to 17:00. Besides this event, the Fire Service managed four separate incidents in the Paphos district involving fallen trees and electrical damage caused by the gales. The Paphos District Self-Government Organization (EOA) president, Charalambos Pittokopitis, confirmed that the building possessed all necessary planning and construction permits. An investigation is currently underway to determine the precise circumstances under which the structure detached from the building.
