Severe weather causes widespread power outages and property damage in Cyprus
Severe weather conditions, characterized by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and lightning, have caused widespread power outages across several districts in Cyprus between October 28 and October 29, 2026. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) reported network faults affecting multiple areas, including Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos. Specifically, residents in Skarinou, Choirokoitia, Ayios Theodoros, Dromolaxia, Arsos, Koilani, Pyrgos Lemesou, Kellaki, Sanida, Acheleia, and Koloni faced disruptions to their electricity supply. EAC technical crews were deployed to identify and repair these faults, with restoration schedules varying by region.
In addition to electrical infrastructure damage, the adverse weather caused significant property destruction. In Paphos, strong winds resulted in metal structures, including a pergola, falling onto parked vehicles, leading to extensive material damage. The Department of Meteorology issued a yellow weather warning for isolated strong thunderstorms and hail, with wind gusts reaching up to 8 on the Beaufort scale. Authorities have urged the public to stay informed through official EAC announcements while crews continue ongoing repair operations to restore full service to all affected regions.
