Cyprus participates for the first time in the Oxi Day military parade in Thessaloniki
On October 28, 2026, the annual Oxi Day military parade in Thessaloniki featured a historic first: the participation of a formal military contingent from the National Guard of Cyprus. The parade, held on Megalou Alexandrou Avenue, took place in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas.
The Cypriot representation included a platoon of 24 commandos from the National Guard, as well as 24 volunteer reserve frogmen from the Cypriot Reserve Frogmen Association (SEVAK). Additionally, the event honored veterans, including former prisoners of the 1974 Turkish invasion and members of various war invalid associations. The presence of these groups was witnessed by the Cypriot Minister of Defense, Vasilis Palmas, who had met earlier with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, to discuss defense cooperation and the ongoing development of the 'Shield of Achilles' air defense program.
The parade also showcased modern weapon systems, including advanced anti-drone equipment and missile technology. Authorities utilized both operational hardware and demonstration models to highlight current military capabilities. This event served to underscore the enduring strategic ties and shared democratic values between Greece and Cyprus.
