Cyprus confirms permanent presence of Greek military assets and new defense acquisitions
Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas announced on October 28, 2026, that Greek F-16 fighter jets and a Greek Navy vessel have established a permanent presence in Cyprus. Speaking from Thessaloniki during the Ochi Day celebrations, Palmas emphasized that defense cooperation between Nicosia and Athens has transitioned from symbolic gestures to concrete political and military action. The announcement marks a notable shift in policy, as previous deployments of these assets were officially described as temporary.
In addition to the strengthened ties with Greece, Minister Palmas confirmed that Cyprus signed a new contract with Israel on October 26, 2026, for the acquisition of an offshore patrol vessel. This procurement is part of a broader strategy to enhance national defense capabilities through partnerships with nations such as France and Israel, as well as participation in the European Union’s SAFE defense financing scheme. During the events in Thessaloniki, Cypriot commandos participated in the military parade for the first time, further highlighting the deepening military integration between the two nations. These measures are intended to modernize the National Guard and bolster security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
