Qatar leads mediation efforts to end conflict between Iran and US-Israeli coalition
Qatar, alongside Pakistan, is spearheading international efforts to mediate an end to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israeli coalition, which began in February 2026. This week, a Qatari delegation visited Tehran to present a new draft proposal aimed at de-escalating regional tensions that have severely disrupted global oil supplies and shipping routes. The proposed seven-day plan outlines daily confidence-building measures for both sides and suggests multiple nations act as guarantors for a potential resolution.
While officials briefed on the negotiations suggest Tehran is expected to provide a response by the end of this week, a senior Iranian official dismissed the proposal as containing "unacceptable ideas." Meanwhile, Qatar has urged Iran to demonstrate good intentions by ceasing threats against Gulf Arab states and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The situation remains volatile, as US President Donald Trump has reiterated threats of further military strikes, and Iranian security officials have reportedly warned of potential retaliatory attacks against regional undersea cables. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have also engaged in recent diplomatic discussions with Iranian officials to prevent further spillover of the conflict, which has recently intensified with Houthi attacks near Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
