Cyprus commemorates the 86th anniversary of Ochi Day
Cyprus celebrated the 86th anniversary of Ochi Day on October 28, 2026, honoring the historic 1940 refusal of Greece to yield to the Italian fascist ultimatum. The nationwide commemorations included church services and military-style parades, featuring participation from students, scouts, veterans, and various organizations.
In Nicosia, official proceedings included a commemorative service at the Apostle Barnabas Cathedral led by Archbishop Georgios. The event was attended by President Nikos Christodoulides, House President Annita Demetriou, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, and Greek Ambassador Konstantinos Kollias. Following the service, President Christodoulides and the Greek ambassador presided over a parade outside the Greek embassy. Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis delivered the keynote address.
Speaking after the events, President Christodoulides emphasized that national sovereignty and dignity remain non-negotiable. He invoked the legacy of the approximately 20,000 Cypriots who served alongside Allied forces during the Second World War, noting their sacrifice as a cornerstone of the island's historical identity.
