Severe weather causes flooding and displacements in Skiathos and South Pelion
Severe weather hit Greece on October 28, 2026, causing major flooding in Skiathos and South Pelion. Heavy rainfall, exceeding 100 millimeters in some areas, turned roads into torrents and cut off access to various settlements, including parts of the village of Platania in Magnesia.
The emergency alert system 112 was activated for residents in Platania, urging them to move to higher floors for safety as a local stream overflowed, sweeping away infrastructure. The Mayor of South Pelion, Michalis Mitzikos, who became trapped in the village, described the situation as potentially more severe than the previous catastrophic storm, Daniel. Emergency services successfully evacuated at least one wounded resident from South Pelion by boat due to the extreme conditions.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation across Magnesia and the Sporades. As of the latest reports, movement is restricted in affected areas, and further emergency measures remain in place as the storm persists.
