Apoel Nicosia secures cup victory with academy-led performance
On October 28, 2026, Apoel Nicosia defeated Chalkanoras 5-2 in a Coca-Cola Cup match held at the GSP Stadium, successfully advancing to the Round of 16. The match was characterized by the performance of academy-produced players, with 22-year-old forward Stavros Georgiou scoring a "perfect" hat-trick—netting goals with his left foot, right foot, and a header. Stelios Vrontis and Konstantinos Poursaitidis also scored, with academy players responsible for all five goals for the winning side. For Chalkanoras, the scorers were Konstantinidis and Slupski.
Manager Nikos Papadopoulos utilized the match to test squad depth, giving playing time to several reserves while resting key regulars. Papadopoulos highlighted the importance of his young talents, stating that his faith in players like Georgiou was a primary reason for his decision not to sign additional forwards during the transfer window. The win serves as a confidence booster for the team as they shift their focus back to domestic league competition. Currently, the club is also working on finalizing a long-term agreement with a new investment group, with official documents expected to be completed shortly.
