Seventy countries commit to the Women, Peace and Security agenda
On October 27, 2026, 72 countries, including the Republic of Cyprus, issued a joint statement at the United Nations Security Council in New York. The declaration, presented by Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, reaffirms the global commitment to protecting women and girls in armed conflicts and ensuring their meaningful participation in peace processes.
The signatories, which include the European Union and several Security Council members such as the United Kingdom, France, and Denmark, advocate for the full and equal involvement of women in leadership roles at all decision-making levels. The initiative specifically supports the United Nations Secretary-General’s call for women to comprise at least one-third of all participants in peace negotiations.
Maria Michael, the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, highlighted the ongoing implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325, adopted in 2000. She stated that Cyprus remains dedicated to translating these principles into concrete national actions, focusing on post-conflict reconstruction, conflict prevention, and the empowerment of women in decision-making centers. The event served as an open debate to emphasize that immediate investment in the protection and advancement of women is essential for global stability.
