Averof Neophytou shifts campaign strategy to internal dialogue amid DISY tensions
One month before the internal elections of the Democratic Rally (DISY) party in Cyprus, candidate Averof Neophytou has announced a change in his campaign strategy. He stated that he will prioritize direct, personal dialogue with the party's members over public debates, citing concerns that such media confrontations undermine unity. Neophytou aims to focus on listening to the concerns of families, workers, small business owners, and youth, particularly regarding the ongoing Cyprus problem.
This decision comes amid heightened internal friction within DISY. Reports indicate that internal divisions have intensified following recent comments by party official Harris Georgiades, who characterized the current selection process as being conducted under pressure. Meanwhile, Neophytou is running against candidate Giorgos Pamporidis. Party leadership, including President Annita Demetriou, is reportedly attempting to enforce a policy of public silence among party officials to lower tensions, although this move has faced criticism as ineffective. Despite this, both candidates have publicly committed to respecting the election outcome, even as observers note significant political polarization within the organization.
