Hellenic Basketball Federation calls for elections following match-fixing scandal
The Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) has announced that it will hold in-person elections on December 20, 2026, to elect a new Board of Directors. The new president, Angelos Papanikolaou, emphasized that the decision aims to ensure institutional stability and restore trust in the sport following a major scandal involving match-fixing. Papanikolaou stated that the organization is currently working in coordination with the Ministry of Sports and requested financial assistance, as the Federation is facing a funding suspension due to the ongoing crisis.
Minister of Sports Ioannis Vroutsis expressed support for the election plan, noting that it aligns with government efforts to restore credibility to Greek basketball. The Ministry intends to utilize the 'e-Kouros' platform to oversee the process and ensure that only legitimate athletic clubs participate. While reports suggest that former player Giorgos Printezis was approached to lead a new electoral slate as a candidate of broad consensus, sources indicate that he is currently unwilling to pursue such a role due to personal circumstances and the turbulent state of the sport.
