Audit report discusses National Guard catering and meat consumption frequency
On October 29, 2026, the Parliamentary Audit Committee discussed the Audit Office's special report regarding the National Guard’s catering system. The report noted that while the overall quality and quantity of meals are satisfactory, there are concerns regarding the frequency of meat consumption. Depending on the meal system used, meat is served between seven and nine times per week, with pre-prepared catering meals containing meat nine times weekly. Other issues identified include a 15% waste rate in ready-made meals, the presence of expired food in some kitchens, and a lack of professional chefs in four specific kitchens.
The annual cost for feeding soldiers is approximately €10 million, with a per-soldier cost of €7.50 plus VAT for catering and an estimated €8.15 for in-unit kitchen meals. The Audit Office conducted unannounced inspections and surveyed 1,100 soldiers to evaluate food perception. Audit Director Akis Kikas recommended reallocating professional culinary staff to ensure every kitchen is properly staffed. Officials stated that a committee will be reconvened to evaluate and potentially update the current menu and nutrition guidelines, which have not been revised since 2019.
