France faces third consecutive weekend of nationwide protests
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, France experienced its third consecutive weekend of mass protests as citizens expressed frustration over the rising cost of living and the state of the education system. Despite official prohibitions on demonstrations in central Paris, the Administrative Court permitted a march between the Place de la Bastille and the Place de la Nation, though the Interior Ministry signaled its intent to appeal the ruling. Demonstrations occurred in numerous major cities, including Lyon, Marseille, and Bordeaux, with roughly 70,000 police officers deployed across the country to maintain order.
Official figures from the Interior Ministry reported 320,000 participants nationwide, while youth organizations claimed the turnout reached 500,000. While most marches remained peaceful, authorities reported violent clashes involving a 'hard core' of several hundred agitators in Paris and other cities, who set fires and threw projectiles at police. By the end of the day, authorities confirmed over 420 arrests. The protests coincided with Halloween, prompting heightened security measures due to concerns that demonstrators might hide their identities. Student and trade union leaders have already called for further mobilizations, including school and university blockades, beginning this coming Tuesday.
