Villa Vie Odyssey cruise project collapses in Cambodia
A planned long-term world cruise operated by Villa Vie Residences has ended in failure, leaving 203 passengers stranded in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The vessel, the Villa Vie Odyssey, which was designed to house up to 650 passengers and 156 crew members, was immobilized after the company faced severe financial difficulties caused by surging fuel prices. Participants, some of whom had paid up to 440,000 euros for the multi-year voyage, were forced to disembark and vacate their cabins, which many had treated as their primary residences.
The project originally launched in October 2024 from Belfast, Northern Ireland, following significant initial delays. The company had promised an ambitious "eternal" cruise experience, offering residents the ability to live permanently at sea while visiting hundreds of global destinations. Following the sudden termination of the voyage, some passengers managed to secure air travel home, while others remain in Cambodia, seeking temporary housing and long-term solutions to their sudden displacement. The collapse has resulted in significant financial losses for travelers who had sold their homes to fund the venture.
