Cyprus-based SPAVO wins international NGO award
The Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO) has been named the 'Domestic Abuse Support NGO of the Year 2026/27' at the Southern Europe Prestige Awards. This international recognition honors the organization's 36-year commitment to providing specialized protection and support for victims of domestic and gender-based violence across Cyprus.
SPAVO's comprehensive service network was specifically highlighted by the judging panel, including the 24-hour national helpline 1440, crisis intervention units, psychological counseling, and secure shelters for women and children. The award also recognized the operation of the 'Home for Women,' alongside the organization's specialized interventions for perpetrators aimed at curbing abusive behavior. Furthermore, the association received acclaim for its ongoing educational training programs and international collaborative partnerships.
In a statement following the announcement, SPAVO dedicated this achievement to its staff, volunteers, and all individuals who utilize their services. The organization emphasized that simply encouraging victims to speak out is insufficient, noting that the award reflects its systemic approach to victim protection and advocacy.
