President Christodoulides reaffirms commitment to Cyprus talks ahead of Holguin visit
On October 29, 2026, President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides expressed his readiness to pursue every effort to resume substantive negotiations on the Cyprus issue. The statement was made during his attendance at the 9th SkillsCyprus 2026 National Skills Competition, shortly before the arrival of Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General.
President Christodoulides acknowledged the significant difficulties and challenges currently facing the peace process. However, he emphasized that as far as it depends on him, he will do his utmost to create a window of opportunity for restarting dialogue. The President confirmed he remains prepared to present new ideas and approaches, provided they stay within the agreed-upon framework for a Cyprus resolution.
While the President did not downplay the existing obstacles, his message focused on proactive engagement with international mediators to break the deadlock. The visit of the UN envoy is viewed as a critical juncture for assessing whether these new proposals can facilitate a return to the negotiating table.
