Opposition MPs disrupt Albanian parliament session with smoke grenades
On Thursday, October 29, 2026, the Albanian parliament descended into chaos as opposition members of the Democratic Party ignited smoke grenades and flares inside the chamber. The protest interrupted a legislative session, which included a scheduled vote on a bill concerning the Bank of Albania. Opposition leader and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha addressed the assembly, criticizing government actions before his microphone was muted, while other members held photos of protesters allegedly injured during recent police crackdowns on student demonstrations.
The incident follows weeks of escalating anti-government protests in Albania, characterized by allegations of excessive police force. In response to the unrest, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced new measures on Sunday intended to curb violent demonstrations, including the introduction of fines amounting to 500,000 lek (approximately $6,200) for individuals involved in protests that escalate into violence. As a consequence of the disruption in the chamber, parliamentary officials confirmed the expulsion of four opposition deputies from the ongoing proceedings.
This demonstration marks a significant intensification of the political friction between the ruling majority and the opposition. The situation remains volatile as both the government and the opposition continue to trade accusations regarding the handling of public dissent and the enforcement of order.
