Three suspects identified in deadly Plaka explosion caused by copper theft
Three men have been identified by Greek authorities as the primary suspects responsible for a lethal explosion that occurred one month ago in the Plaka district, resulting in the deaths of six people. Investigators from the Fire Brigade’s Arson Crimes Investigation Directorate concluded that the explosion was triggered by a gas leak caused when the suspects damaged supply pipes while attempting to steal copper components.
The suspects, identified as one Albanian and two Greek nationals, were captured on surveillance footage entering the three-story building in the early hours of the day of the incident. Video evidence shows the men fleeing the scene within minutes while carrying copper piping. Experts from the National Technical University of Athens pinpointed the exact location of the gas leak, and the Fire Brigade corroborated these findings through site reconstruction, forensic analysis, and the lifting of communication privacy, which provided critical evidence.
Following these findings, arrest warrants have been issued for the three individuals. Authorities are currently searching for the suspects as the investigation continues into the sequence of events that led to the tragic explosion.
