Major cyberattack hits Binance exchange with $6.3 billion stolen
On October 29, 2026, the global cryptocurrency exchange Binance suffered a massive cyberattack resulting in the theft of digital assets valued at approximately $6.3 billion. The breach was executed in just 20 minutes, with hackers moving funds across eight blockchain networks including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron, and Solana. Investigations by TRM Labs suggest the operation was likely conducted by a group linked to North Korea, possibly the notorious TraderTraitor collective, after early preparations were detected as far back as October 28.
Binance initially identified the entry point as a compromised engineer's laptop, which allowed attackers to infiltrate internal systems and gain control over hot wallets. In response, the exchange suspended all deposits and withdrawals to contain the incident and has committed to covering user losses using corporate funds and an insurance reserve. While authorities and security partners have managed to freeze approximately $3 billion of the stolen assets, the status of the remaining $3.3 billion remains unclear.
This incident is being labeled as one of the largest financial robberies in history. Market reaction was immediate, causing a decline in major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and BNB. Binance is working with law enforcement to track the perpetrators and expects to resume withdrawal services within 48 hours.
