Cyprus commemorates late journalist and peace activist Sevgiul Uludag
On October 29, 2026, a commemorative event was held at the Paphos Literary and Arts Centre to honor the life and work of journalist Sevgiul Uludag. The event, held in observance of Cyprus Missing Persons Day, celebrated her extensive career and her tireless efforts to uncover the truth regarding the fate of individuals who disappeared during the intercommunal violence of the 1960s and the 1974 Turkish invasion.
Uludag, who passed away in June at the age of 67, was instrumental in identifying mass graves for both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot families. Her investigative work, spanning over 45 years, earned her international recognition, including the International Courage in Journalism Award in 2008, the European Citizen’s Prize in 2014, and a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019. The programme in Paphos featured an address by centre president Stelios Sofokleous and a documentary film about her life directed by Panicos Chrysanthou.
The tribute highlighted the ongoing challenge regarding the more than 2,000 people who remain missing on the island. By honoring Uludag, participants emphasized that the search for justice transcends ethnic divides, reaffirming the importance of humanitarian cooperation in resolving the long-standing tragedy of the missing persons.
