Central Bank of Cyprus governor warns of persistent inflationary pressures
Central Bank of Cyprus Governor Christodoulos Patsalides announced that the institution remains in a state of high vigilance following the European Central Bank's decision on October 29, 2026, to maintain base interest rates. The decision comes amidst a challenging economic environment characterized by persistent inflationary pressures and a significant energy shock.
In September, Cyprus recorded an inflation rate of 5.2%, driven primarily by a 21% surge in energy prices and a 7.1% increase in service costs. Governor Patsalides noted that while the Cypriot economy continues to demonstrate resilience through a strong labor market, healthy public finances, and a stable banking sector, geopolitical uncertainties and rising energy costs necessitate a cautious economic policy. The goal remains to steer inflation back toward the medium-term target of 2%.
Moving forward, the Central Bank of Cyprus intends to closely monitor market developments and geopolitical factors. Financial authorities emphasize that maintaining prudent fiscal policies is essential to safeguarding the country's ongoing economic development despite the prevailing external risks.
