Cyprus Transport Ministry addresses public transit deficiencies
On October 30, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Transport, Evi Tsolaki, acknowledged significant operational issues affecting public bus services. Key concerns identified include the lack of posted schedules at bus stops, difficulties with payment methods, and the inability to make electronic reservations for intercity travel, which often results in passengers being left behind when vehicles reach capacity.
In response to these challenges, Minister Tsolaki announced that transport companies have been instructed to display official schedules at all stops immediately. The ministry is expanding the credit card payment system currently in use in Limassol to all other cities and is exploring a digital booking platform for intercity routes. Furthermore, the government aims to reduce commute times, which are currently reported as twice as long as driving in private vehicles. Proposed solutions include the implementation of dedicated bus lanes to mitigate traffic congestion and grant priority to public transport.
The ministry maintains that these improvements are being pursued within the scope of existing contracts. Authorities have committed to resolving these systemic failures to improve public transit reliability and encourage higher ridership across the country.
