El Salvador deploys 2,000 troops to Haiti to rescue missing military personnel
The government of El Salvador has deployed over 2,000 military personnel to Haiti to launch a large-scale rescue operation for four Salvadoran soldiers who have been missing for ten days. The missing individuals were members of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) sanctioned by the United Nations. They disappeared on October 18 after their armored vehicle was ambushed by a gang while returning to base from a market in the suburbs of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Salvadoran Foreign Ministry officials confirmed the operation is supported by various international partners and organizations. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele held a phone conversation with Haiti's interim Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime on Wednesday to coordinate the search and rescue efforts. The mission remains ongoing as the country continues its search for the missing Air Force specialists, with both nations pledging continued cooperation to resolve the situation.
