AKEL launches strategy and framework for 2028 presidential elections
The AKEL party in Cyprus is set to begin its formal internal preparations for the 2028 presidential elections. The party's Central Committee is scheduled to meet on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 09:30 in the ETKA-PEO building in Nicosia. The meeting, which includes an opening address by General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, aims to establish the political framework and strategic goals necessary for the upcoming electoral process.
Party spokesperson Haris Polykarpou stated that the roadmap involves three core components: ratifying the party's political platform, initiating discussions for potential alliances with other political groups, and identifying a candidate who can best promote the goal of progressive change. While there has been media speculation regarding the possibility of Stefanos Stefanou running as a candidate, party officials emphasize that the primary objective currently remains the formulation of policies to address the Cyprus issue, the cost of living crisis, and housing shortages.
Following the ratification of this political framework, the party will proceed with formal consultations with other political entities to finalize its electoral strategy. The ultimate goal is to move beyond mere individual candidacy and push for a substantial shift in government policy after 13 years of leadership by the current and previous administrations.
