AKEL launches strategy for 2028 presidential election
The Central Committee of AKEL convened on October 31, 2026, to formally establish the party's strategy and political framework for the February 2028 presidential elections. General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou announced a seven-pillar platform aimed at achieving "progressive change" in the country's governance, focusing on resolving the Cyprus problem, implementing a new economic model, and strengthening social welfare. Stefanou harshly criticized the current administration of Nikos Christodoulides and the DISY party, asserting that they share the same failed policies.
The party has prioritized building a broad progressive front through alliances with other political forces, civil society organizations, and prominent individuals before selecting a presidential candidate. The party aims to finalize its candidate choice by spring 2027. While no formal candidate has been named, potential contenders mentioned in the media include Stefanos Stefanou, Andreas Mavroyiannis, Tasos Yiasemides, Tasos Christofides, and Andreas Vyras. Consultations are expected to begin shortly with groups such as ALMA, Volt, the Greens, and Direct Democracy. In response, DISY challenged AKEL's electoral credentials, questioning why the party does not intend to run with its own candidate and criticizing AKEL's previous period in power.
