AKEL launches strategy for 2028 presidential elections sparking political friction
On October 31, 2026, the Central Committee of the AKEL party met to formalize its roadmap for the 2028 presidential elections. Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou announced that the party's primary goal is a "progressive change" in government, seeking to move past the administrations of Nicos Anastasiades and current President Nikos Christodoulides. Stefanou outlined seven key priorities, emphasizing the need for a broad progressive front and confirming the party intends to pursue alliances rather than running a standalone candidate, a strategy it aims to negotiate with parties such as ALMA, VOLT, Immediate Democracy, and the Ecologists.
Following the announcement, a heated political exchange broke out with the Democratic Rally (DISY). DISY criticized AKEL for its past record in government, specifically citing the 2013 economic crisis, the Dromolaxia scandal, and the 2011 Mari naval base explosion. Furthermore, DISY questioned why AKEL avoids fielding its own candidate if it truly represents society. Meanwhile, the ELAM party also attacked AKEL, accusing its leadership of fear-mongering and political targeting. AKEL dismissed the criticism from DISY and ELAM as attempts to divert attention from their own internal party problems and policy failures.
