Greek government confirms progress on electricity interconnection with Cyprus
On October 30, 2026, the Greek government reaffirmed its commitment to the electricity interconnection project between Greece and Cyprus. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis explicitly stated that the project will proceed based on international law without requiring any permits from Turkey. He emphasized that the licensing process is currently being managed solely by Greek authorities and that no other state has a role in this regulatory procedure.
Addressing recent media reports, Marinakis clarified the distinction between project notification and official licensing. He explained that routine notifications provided by companies during such infrastructure projects do not carry legal consequences, whereas formal permit applications are a distinct, state-level process. Vice President of the Government Kostis Hatzidakis also dismissed critics of the government's foreign policy, noting that the administration remains focused on national strategy rather than domestic political rhetoric. The government ruled out any involvement from third parties, such as France, in the licensing process, maintaining that Greece remains fully sovereign in its strategic decisions.
