Foundation stone laid for new TEPAK faculty in Larnaca
On October 30, 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides presided over the foundation ceremony for the new Faculty of Marine Sciences, Technology and Sustainable Development of the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) in Larnaca. This project, which aims to boost research, innovation, and the blue economy, follows a decision originally announced in March 2025. The faculty will include two main departments: Sustainable Development and Marine Sciences and Technology, with curricula developed by an international academic advisory committee.
The university branch is scheduled to welcome its first students in September 2027, initially focusing on the Sustainable Development program in temporary facilities provided by the Larnaca Municipality, followed by the launch of the Marine Sciences program in 2028. Rector Panagiotis Zaphiris announced that an international evaluation committee from the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education will inspect the branch on November 12, 2026.
President Christodoulides emphasized that the government is committed to transparent, legally secure institutional procedures to avoid the setbacks and cost overruns that have previously impacted other infrastructure projects. He noted that this methodical approach will also be applied to the ongoing development plans for the city’s port and marina, as part of a wider effort to upgrade Larnaca ahead of its role as the European Capital of Culture in 2030.
