Legislative proposal to publish names of non-compliant GHS providers
On October 30, 2026, Kyrenia Member of Parliament Adamos Aspris introduced a legislative proposal to increase transparency within the General Healthcare System (GHS). The bill mandates that the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) publicly disclose information regarding healthcare providers who have been convicted of specific offenses or sanctioned for breaches of GHS legislation. The proposal requires each publication to be supported by a specifically justified decision from the HIO board.
Under this proposal, disclosed information will include the provider's name or business title, professional capacity, the nature of the violation, and any penalties imposed. This data will be available on the HIO website and integrated into the online search function for patients when looking for contracted providers. Furthermore, the bill stipulates that if a provider has a pending court case related to their professional duties, the HIO must publicly note the existence of the ongoing legal action, while explicitly stating that no verdict has been reached yet.
The legislation incorporates procedural safeguards, notably granting the concerned provider the right to be heard before any public announcement is made by the HIO. The measure aims to inform patients about the integrity of their healthcare providers and ensure greater accountability within the national health system.
