Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Culture presents 2027 budget of 64.3 million euros
On October 30, 2026, Deputy Minister of Culture Klea Hadjistefanou-Papaelina presented the proposed 2027 budget for the Deputy Ministry of Culture to the Parliamentary Committee on Financial and Budgetary Affairs. The total budget stands at 64.3 million euros, compared to 65.7 million euros in 2026. While the nominal figure is lower, officials clarify that the 2026 budget included a one-time allocation of 2.2 million euros for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Excluding this extraordinary expenditure, the 2027 budget reflects an actual increase of 820,000 euros. Currently, 65.6% of the budget is allocated for operational expenses, while the remaining 34.4% is directed toward developmental projects and initiatives.
The presentation occurred amid a period of internal volatility following staff strikes in September 2026 and ongoing tensions with the artistic community. While the overall budget shows growth, the distribution of funds has drawn scrutiny. Reports indicate a significant 43% decrease in developmental appropriations for the Department of Antiquities, despite claims that cultural heritage protection remains a high priority. Conversely, an additional 30 million euros has been earmarked for the construction of the new Archaeological Museum of Cyprus. The committee continues its review as the ministry attempts to balance its strategic goals with administrative challenges and sector-specific concerns.
