SEK union calls for caution in pension reform progress
On Friday, October 30, 2026, the General Secretary of the SEK trade union, Andreas Matsas, stated that despite positive developments, significant issues remain regarding the ongoing pension reform in Cyprus. Following the Pan-Cypriot Conference held at the union's headquarters, Matsas emphasized that a final agreement is not yet imminent, particularly due to unresolved aspects concerning the second pillar of the pension system, which involves provident funds.
While the official target remains to implement the reforms by January 1, 2027, the union leader warned that adhering to this timeline should not compromise the fundamental objective of ensuring adequate retirement income. Matsas clarified that the quality and effectiveness of the reform are prioritized over strict adherence to the schedule. In the event that negotiations extend beyond the deadline, the union has proposed the potential for retroactive application of the final agreements to ensure no disruption for future retirees.
