Cyprus Police establishes permanent committee for disciplinary cases
On October 30, 2026, the Chief of the Cyprus Police, Themistos Arnaoutis, announced sixteen officer reassignments, headlined by the creation of a new permanent Disciplinary Hearing Committee. Effective November 2, 2026, three officers with legal backgrounds will exclusively handle disciplinary matters: Senior Superintendent Ioannis Cheimonas, Superintendent B' Stefanos Terezopoulos, and Superintendent B' Charalambos Chatziiasemis. The establishment of this group aims to ensure faster, more consistent, and professional adjudication of non-serious disciplinary offenses within the force.
Previously, disciplinary duties were managed by various officers in collaboration with the relevant Assistant Chief, or through the Legal Department. The new organizational structure is intended to improve accountability and transparency. According to official statements, these changes were prompted by a desire to modernize the force and are aligned with recommendations from the Council of Europe's Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) regarding the timely and objective resolution of disciplinary cases. The initiative seeks to streamline procedures and reduce delays without creating a separate or parallel disciplinary process.
