43-year-old man in custody following murder of 61-year-old woman in Limassol
A 43-year-old Syrian man has been remanded in custody for eight days by the Limassol District Court following the murder of 61-year-old Olga Vasilieva. The suspect confessed to striking the woman multiple times on the head with a hammer at his home after she allegedly insulted his origin. He admitted to keeping the body at his residence for one night before transporting it to a field owned by the victim in the Saittas area, where he disposed of the remains in a sewer well and reportedly poured bleach over them to cover his tracks.
The investigation was triggered on October 23 after the victim's lawyer, Pampos Ioannou, discovered her dog malnourished and unattended in her apartment. Police identified the suspect after receiving a photograph of him with the victim from her son. Authorities apprehended the man at Larnaca airport on October 30 as he prepared to flee to Beirut. A forensic examination by pathologist Nikolas Charalambous confirmed that the victim died from severe head injuries caused by blunt-force trauma. The suspect, who had been in a relationship with the victim for five months, now faces charges of premeditated murder as police continue to examine financial records and telecommunications data.
