Generation Z holds mass protests across Germany
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, large-scale protests organized by the movement 'Gen Z regelt' took place in over 30 German cities. Initially, organizers expected over 165,000 participants to voice demands concerning education funding, climate protection, and the rejection of mandatory military service. Demonstrators also protested against rising living costs, the reduction of social welfare programs, and increased state surveillance. Protests were held in major hubs including Berlin, where thousands gathered near the Brandenburg Gate, as well as in Cologne, Frankfurt, and Munich.
While the organizers insisted on peaceful protest and distancing themselves from extremist elements, authorities remained on high alert. Shops in several cities covered their windows with protective panels to prevent potential looting. Although the protests were largely peaceful, Andreas Roßkopf, president of the Federal Police Union, reported that the situation escalated in cities like Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, and Berlin due to masked autonomous groups. Police utilized pepper spray and water cannons to restore order. Despite some police injuries, officials reported the situation as under control with no significant material damage by late evening. The movement, which cites similar youth-led mobilization in France, Italy, and Belgium, maintains that the government under Friedrich Merz has consistently ignored the younger generation's concerns.
