Human remains discovered in Voukolies, Chania, sparking investigation into cold cases
Police authorities in Chania, Crete, have launched an investigation following the discovery of human remains in a rural area of Voukolies on October 30, 2026. The remains were found by a local landowner while he was clearing his field, prompting an immediate notification to the Chania Crime Investigation Sub-directorate. Initial forensic examinations indicate that the remains belong to a female.
The findings have led investigators to revisit long-standing unsolved missing persons cases in the region. Specifically, authorities are examining potential connections to the disappearance of 75-year-old Saniko Tsaousi, who went missing from Alikianos, Chania, on September 23, 2022. Tsaousi disappeared while traveling a short distance to visit a relative, and her fate has remained unknown for over four years.
The investigation is currently ongoing as experts work to confirm the identity of the discovered remains through forensic analysis. Authorities are comparing the findings against data from other registered disappearances in the wider area to determine if the victim is indeed one of the missing women from the local files.
