New stray animal shelter planned for Paphos in 2027
Authorities in Paphos are preparing to announce the establishment of a new stray animal shelter, with operations expected to begin in 2027. Following months of intensive coordination between the central government and local authorities, both the location and the regulatory procedures for the facility have been finalized. The project gained significant momentum under the leadership of the new Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Elias Myrianthous, whose personal involvement and engagement with local stakeholders proved pivotal.
The initiative addresses the increasingly urgent issue of stray animal overpopulation in the Paphos district. Efforts accelerated during the summer months to expedite administrative requirements, as confirmed by Acting Paphos Mayor Angelos Onisiforou. This project builds upon discussions initiated in May 2026, which involved the four mayors of the Paphos district, the Paphos Union of Communities, and representatives from the animal welfare organization Simba Animal Aid, including Natasa Michaelidou and Alexandros Orietta. Officials are expected to release formal details regarding the project within the next few weeks.
