Ministry of Justice responds to DISY criticism regarding the 2027 budget
On October 31, 2026, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus issued a statement responding to criticism from the opposition party DISY regarding the proposed 2027 budget. The Ministry defended its fiscal planning, emphasizing that the budget should be viewed alongside ongoing projects rather than in isolation. They asserted that the administration has launched initiatives to address long-standing issues within a single year.
Key policy goals outlined by the Ministry include the construction of new prison facilities, addressing chronic prison overcrowding, and establishing a separate detention center for minors. Furthermore, the Ministry reported progress on the reorganization of the police force, strategies to combat organized crime, and the introduction of legislation to create a Coast Guard. Additionally, significant investments in operational and technological infrastructure are currently underway.
Regarding the construction of the new prisons, a project valued at hundreds of millions of euros, the Ministry clarified that full funding will not be registered in the budget until all necessary feasibility studies and consultations are finalized. The government maintains that their approach is characterized by measurable results and clear implementation schedules, dismissing the claim that their planning lacks substance.
