Criminal network exposed behind Paidiki Chara NGO fraud
Greek authorities have dismantled a criminal network operating under the guise of the NGO 'Paidiki Chara', which allegedly embezzled millions of euros intended for children with serious illnesses. Six individuals, including the founder, 37-year-old Konstantinos Firinidis, his wife, and his brother, were arrested following investigations into suspicious fundraising activities. While the NGO claimed to support families, reports indicate that only a fraction of the collected funds reached the patients, with over 3.5 to 4.5 million euros allegedly diverted for personal luxury, travel, and illegal match-fixing in local football leagues.
The investigation was sparked by anonymous complaints in 2024 and 2025 regarding a lack of financial transparency. Evidence, including wiretapped conversations, suggests that the organization used deceptive marketing and photos of sick children to solicit donations. Furthermore, Firinidis, a local football official, is accused of bribing referees and using stolen funds for betting. The accused face multiple felony charges, including fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, and bribery. The suspects are currently appearing before an investigator in Thessaloniki to provide statements.
