Criminal network exposed for defrauding sick children through charity fraud
A criminal organization in Greece has been dismantled following a large-scale investigation by the Department of Financial Crimes. The group, operating since 2018 under the NGO 'Paidiki Chara,' exploited the public's sympathy for sick children, particularly cancer patients, to misappropriate millions in donations. While the NGO's accounts recorded over 5.8 million euros in revenue, only approximately 1.1 million euros were distributed to the families of 74 beneficiaries. Authorities arrested six individuals, including the 37-year-old leader and his spouse, who allegedly used the funds to finance luxury lifestyles and engage in match-fixing activities in local football, including bribing referees and placing illicit bets.
The suspects now face serious charges, including fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, bribery for match manipulation, and participating in a criminal gang. Evidence includes leaked dialogues where the leaders boasted of personal spending. The investigation revealed the group manipulated donors—including high-profile figures such as Maria Angelicoussis, Nikos Oikonomopoulos, and Tasos Chatzigiovanis—by using their support to build false credibility. The detainees have been referred to an investigative magistrate in Thessaloniki and were granted extensions to provide statements in the coming days.
